Although bears disappeared from our region a long time ago, local we can still find traces of them in local toponymyminds us of their fairly recent in this part of the Alps. " Vallorcine" means “valley of the bears”. We invite you to join us and look at our bear heritage, during a hiking tour of this prestine and well-preserved alpine valley.
This four day trek will take you to well known places such as Lac Blanc,or the dinosaur footprints above old Emosson dam, and to more secluded sites like the remote valley of Emaney. As a backdrop, Mont-Blanc will reveal its best features from some very unusual angles.

DAY 1 : LA FLEGERE - LE BUET
We ride the tram to Flégère, to start our hike up to Lake Blanc in the heart of the Aiguilles Rouges wildlife Reserve. The spectacular views leave us speechless. We hike back down by the Chéserys and La Remuaz lakes, and to Col des Montets where we can stop for a visit at the Reserve headquarters. We spend our first night in a hotel at the hamlet of Le Buet.

DAY 2 : LE BUET - EMOSSON
We leave our hotel to head out into the forest all the way up to the alpine meadows of La Loriaz. The altitude gain offers impressive views over the Argentière basin and its surrounding peaks. We continue up to the Terrasse pass, where we stop for a well-deserved lunch break. Then we hike down to see prehistoric dinosaur tracks. And finally follow an ancient trail into the Veudale bowl, and reach the Emosson dam and the Gueulaz hut .

DAY 3 : EMOSSON - FINHAUT
We walk through the Emosson tunnel, then along the lake for a while, until we reach a pleasant trail, ascending through wild alpine grassy slopes leading to Barberine pass. The descent starts with a long scree field dropping into the remote alpine valley of Emaney. Below the waterfalls, alpine pastures offer grazing for local cattle herds, producing excellent cheese. From the hamlet, a forestry road and trail takes us back to the village of Finhaut. Overnight in a hotel (rooms) in Finhaut.

DAY 4 : FINHAUT - LE TOUR - CHAMONIX
After a short minivan transfer to Les Jeurs, we start our day’s hike up to Catogne, and slowy reach the Col des Posettes. The pass offers breathtaking over the Mont-Blanc massif. We hike down to the village of le Tour through the ancient slate mine, and enjoy the unforgettable panorama all the way to the valley.

For safety reasons, the guide may modify the trek itinerary due to terrain, weather or other conditions.

LEVEL : The Bears Valley hiking trip is a moderate trek. A minimum of 700m (2350ft) vertical gain and about 5 to 7 hours of hiking daily. Hiking on generally well-maintained mountain trails, sometimes including easy out-of-trail sections. For active people who don’t mind training to prepare for the hike. A great multiday hike for people with trekking experience.
ACCOMMODATION : 3 nights in basic hotel or mountain hut (in dormitory). Luggage transportation and mini-van assistance along the trip.
GUIDING : Maximum 12 people per guide. For maximum safety and quality guiding.
MEETING PLACE : At 8H30 am in front of the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix on Day 1 (190, place de l'église, 74400 Chamonix). You are welcome to come and meet your guide the evening before at our office at 6 pm.

EQUIPMENT : See attached list.
INSURANCE : Our mountain leaders are self-employed professionals, and therefore covered under a liability insurance via the French Mountain Leaders Association (SNAM). As a tour operator, the Compagnie des Guides is also covered under a tour operator liability insurance contract (MMA IARD).
Repatriation and cancellation insurance are available from our office. Repatriation insurance is mandatory. We strongly recommend the purchase of cancellation insurance.
TRAINING : Good physical condition will allow you to make the most of your holiday. A month before the hike at least, we suggest you walk upstairs, rather than use the elevator. During the weekends you can run, walk or ride your bike to train for the hike. Doing a medical check-up before signing for the trip is recommended. Your guide should be informed of any medical treatment.
CLIMATE : Alpine weather can change suddenly, involving wide temperature variations. Temperatures also drop with altitude, and snow falls in summer are not rare. A high pressure moving in can also bring in cool air. You should anyhow bring warm clothes and be prepared for cold or very hot weather, while minimizing additional weight gain.
