The Gran Paradiso is very well known probably because it is one of the most accessible of the 4000m Alpine peaks. The Madonna on the summit also bears witness to the prominent place the mountain occupies in the Italian psyche, as it is the only 4000m peak entirely in Italy. It is located in the heart of a national park created in 1922 and provides frequent encounters with a rich variety of wildlife, such as chamois and ibex.
The Gran Paradiso is the ideal peak for a first experience of the high-mountain environment. Our three-day programme takes you on a superb loop from the Chabot hut to the Victor Emmanuel hut. This combination guarantees you a more evenly spread physical challenge and enables to you to make the most of the ambiance of the glaciated terrain.
Day 1: Climb up to the Chabod hut
We drive to Valsavarenche from Chamonix via the Mont Blanc tunnel. We start walking from near the village of Pont (1960m). Our climb begins via a steep path through larches. The gentle slopes of high-mountain pastures, or alpages, then lead us to the Chabod hut (2750m).
Vertical ascent: 790m
Day 2: Ascent of the Gran Paradiso
We begin the day by the light of our headtorches along a path leading to the Lavaciau glaier (3200m). We climb up the gentle gradient of the glacier to the junction with the Gran Paradiso glacier (3600m). We continue our ascent via a steeper path to the foot of the summit ridge. The final 50 metres leading to the summit (4065m) are over rock, and gives superb views over the Alps. Descent to the Victor Emmanuel hut (2732m), where we spend the night.
Vertical ascent: 1311m / Vertical descent: 1329m
Day 3: Ascent of the Tresenta
We head for the Tresenta (3609m), which we climb in a return trip from the hut. This satellite summit of the Gran Paradiso provides superb panoramic views of Italy’s Piedmont region, with the Monte Viso as a backdrop. Return to hut and descent to Pont. Return to Chamonix in mid-afternoon. As the ascent of the Tresenta is a roundtrip from the hut, it can be made optional depending on how you are feeling on the day.
Vertical ascent: 877/0m / Vertical descent: 1649/772m
