The Grands Mulets hut lies on the historic route up Mont Blanc, taken by the men who made the first ascent in 1786. This route is no longer used but the hut remains an ideal base camp for exploring the outstanding glaciated terrain of the Bossons glacier and the north face of Mont Blanc.
This programme is aimed at people wishing to immerse themselves in the heart of this stunning glaciated environment. The first day on the Mer de Glace allows you to familiarise yourself with mountaineering techniques. The second day crossing the Bossons glacier allows you to spend the night in the Grands Mulets hut. The next day you climb the Dôme Pitschner, which rises to 3540m, before returning to the valley.
Day 1: Ecole de glace on the Mer de Glace
Start in Chamonix. We take the cog railway to Montenvers (1913m). We climb down the ladders to the Mer de Glace (1750m) to practise some essential mountaineering skills (‘école de glace’) such as crampon and ice axe use and walking while roped together.
Vertical ascent: 200m / Vertical descent: 200m
Day 2: Climb to Grands Mulets hut
Start from the Aiguille du Midi cable car, which we leave at the mid-station, the Plan de l’Aiguille (2310m). We start the traverse along the old path heading towards the ‘gare des glaciers’ (an abandoned cable station). We put on our crampons and continue on towards the Jonction, which lies between the Bossons and Taconnaz glaciers. The Grands Mulets hut appears in this sumptuous décor, perched on a rocky promontory in the heart of this high-mountain environment. Night in the guaranteed warm welcome of Grands Mulets hut (3051m).
Vertical ascent: 900m
Day 3: Ascent of the Dôme Pitschner
We climb the Dôme Pitschner (3450m) at daybreak. Magnificent views across the north face of Mont Blanc, a veritable cathedral of snow and ice. Return to the valley.
Vertical ascent: 400m / Vertical descent: 1300m
