During the 18th century Mt Buet, also called “Ladies’ Mont-Blanc”(3096m) became a mountaineering reference and a first step towards the conquest of Mont-Blanc.
On September 20th 1770, the Deluc brothers reached the top of Mount Buet and lead some scientific experiments. For example, they measured the time required for water to boil at that altitude, and used a barometer to measure altitude. This epic adventure was the first of its kind in the Alps, and the emblematic summit of the Giffre massif, which looks over the alpine cirque of Les Fonds offers an outstanding panoramic view on Mont-Blanc and the surrounding ranges like Aiguilles Rouges and Haut Giffre.
Night in a hut (dormitory) – Food supplies from the hut (picnics).
Day 1 : VALLORCINE - PIERRE À BÉRARD HUT
We leave from the village of Le Buet, just before Vallorcine and hike along L’eau Noire mountain creek in Vallon de Bérard. The abundant wildlife who lives in this remote alpine valley invites us to remain silent and observe… The welcoming creek banks are a perfect opportunity to cool our feet in the refreshing mountain water. Nestled under a huge rocky slab, Pierre à Bérard hut (1920m/6336ft) is well- protected from avalanches. Hut keepers welcome us with hospitality, in a simple and warm atmosphere.
Up : 620m / Hiking Time : 3 H 30
Day 2 : SUMMIT OF MOUNT BUET
Today is the biggest day of our adventure! After an early and very motivated departure, we head out towards the summit! During this magnificent ascent, we enjoy the pleasant smells of rhododendrons and juniper bushes, covering the alpine meadows, and slowly leaving space to firmly anchored rocks and the alpine lawn. We follow the reassuring trail marks, here and there on both sides of the trail. But soon the landscape changes into a large slate- covered hill side, a mineral “mille-feuille” sculpted by the wind and leaving only a lightly marked trail to show the way to the summit. It seems that we have just gone back an entire geological millennium. Mount Buet is absolutely spectacular! After a nice long break to fully enjoy the panoramic view, we will follow the same trail and return to civilization again. We may consider trail options for the way back down.
