This is one great hiking program …
Follow us to the region of Hautes Alpes and we will reveal the well-kept secrets of this remote alpine valley. In the small and secluded village of Névache, the clear waters of the Clarée river meets the glacier fed turquoise blue waters of the Durance. Nearby forts and canons have long been abandoned by mountain infantries. Abandoned barbed wire fences have long been taken down and put away, to leave room to marmots, the new residents of the old war bunkers. Following outstanding trails and numerous off-trail routes, we will admire Barre des Ecrins and the Meije Peak, to only mention a few ! Beauty is everywhere, and for us to enjoy !
Sunday : CHAMONIX - NEVACHE - REFUGE DE BUFFERE
By minivan we transfer to the mountain village of Névache in the Clarée valley around lunch time. Then we check our packs thoroughly to make sure we carry the essentials for our hiking adventure, and make sure we don’t forget anything important. After leaving our big duffle bags in the bus, we hike along the Clarée mountain creek, already under the charm of the Clarée valley. Then we slowly gain altitude and reach Buffère mountain hut (2076m).
Up : 400 m
Monday : REFUGE DE BUFFERE - PORTE DE CRISTOL - NEVACHE
We are now in the Cerces range. Today’s program includes one summit and two mountain passes. We hike up to Buffère pass and then to the summit of Grand Aréa (2869m) to admire the magnificent view ! So many legendary summits are rising just in front of us : Les Agneaux, Mount Pelvoux, Barre des Ecrins. We have to leave this incredible panoramic view to hike down to Cristol pass and lake to take a rest and enjoy our picnic. Then we continue down towards Névache and meet our belongings at the Lame Campground.
Up : 790 m / Down : 880 m
Tuesday : NEVACHE - REFUGE RE MAGGI
For this easy day, we hike over the Thures pass (2194m) and eponymous alpine bowl. This pass is one of the trip lowest in altitude. If we feel like it we can climb to the summit of Aiguille Rouge (2645m) to enjoy an unforgettable view (500m higher !) Then we continue down into Vallée Etroite (the narrow valley). We are in France yet locals speak Italian ! In 1947 and after a few chaotic years, this valley was attached to France. Although located on French soil, the nearby hut still belongs to the Italian Alpine Club and local shepherds prefer to communicate in Italian.
Up : 1000 m / Down : 1100 m (Including the optional ascension)
Wednesday : REFUGE RE MAGGI - COL DU VALLON - NEVACHE
Today‘s hike leads us onto a rather rocky terrain. After leaving Refugio Re Maggi (the Wise Men, 1765m) and the surrounding Melchior, Gaspard and Balthazar peaks, we hike down into Vallon du Vallon and to Névache in the Clarée valley. We spend the night at the campground in the village of Foncouverte.
Up : 880 m / Down : 1045 m
Thursday : NEVACHE - COL DES BERAUDES - COL DE LA PONSONNIERE - PLAN LAVAL
This is a guide’s favorite ! 3 mountain passes are on the menu today, but the elevation gain between them is very small. The trail starts at the end of the Clarée valley. On the way up to Béraudes pass (2890m) we stop to admire the beautiful turquoise blue lake, before dropping into the Guisane valley, the home of Serre Chevalier ski resort. Then we hike up and over Ponsonnière pass (2613m) before hiking down and past 4 more mountain lakes !
Up : 800 m / Down : 920 m
Friday : NEVACHE
A hike in the morning will let us appreciate, one last time, the beauty of the Val Clarée before reaching Névache village. A visit and a small shopping will end this trip in the Cerces range. Back to Chamonix around 5 pm.
Up : 300 m / Down : 300 m
Depending on weather and terrain conditions, mountain leaders or guides may have to change program appropriately.
