Favorite : Cinque Terre & Portofino Peninsula (Italy)
Number of days : 6
Price : 995€

Our mountain leader’s favourite !

Along the Italian Ligure coastline, travellers can find five neat villages huddled against the hill in small sea coves, where locals have lived in harmony with nature for centuries … Man has learnt how to work the steep land above the settlements, build harbours and maintain a traditional fishing industry. In 1998, this amazing region was classified by UNESCO as one of the most beautiful sites in the world. Follow us for an unforgettable visit of the legendary Portofino peninsula, and discover the wide range of beautiful trails this preserved natural environment has to offer.

Because of its central location, the village of Monterosso is ideal to discover the “Cinque Terre” region. In addition it has two beautiful sandy beaches (accessible from the old and new part of town), both heavenly places after a day’s hike !

We’ll spend two nights in Santa Margherita Ligure, only 5 km from Portofino. It is easy to travel to the various villages thanks to a great boat-and-bus transport network. The Camogli harbour, named after women glancing behind the window curtains, waiting for their husband’s return from sea, is well-worth a visit. Finally we can’t miss a stopover at the San Fruttuoso Abbaye between Camogli and the Portofino bay.

We meet in Monterosso at the hotel at 12h am. Early in the afternoon, we start our hike from the village leading into a pine forest until the belvedere of Puta Mesco. From there the view offers a great panorama of the Cinque Terre and the Portofino peninsula. Our trail continues, above the sea until Levanto.
Up/Down : 320 m / Hiking Time : 3 H 00

This great Cinque Terre classic hike crosses the colourful villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. All of them are an invitation to enjoy a halt for an ice cream or a drink in this beautiful coastline.
Up/Down : 460 m / Hiking Time : 5 H 00

It only takes a few minutes by train to get to the village of Riomaggiore. The trail first climbs up to the Montenero sanctuary, 340m above sea level. Then it continues across gorse edges and the village of Campiglia, to finally reach a high cliff line, before heading down to Portovenere, the highest point of the region.
Up/Down : 500 m / Hiking Time : 5 H 00

Santa Madona di Soviore, di Reggio, di Grâces, di Salute … We hike from shrine to shrine, remaining testimonies of the past … Our trail runs along the top of the cliffs above the sea. It takes around 4 to 6 hours to get to our goal.
Up/Down : 500 m / Hiking Time : 4 H 00

Due to its preserved natural environment, the Portofino Peninsula is the home of a rich Mediterranean vegetation and wild life. We will discover the beauty of hidden coves and hamlets, accessible all along the peninsula rocky shore.
Up/Down : 700 m / Hiking Time : 6 H 00

Our last day’s hike takes us to Portofino and its multi-coloured houses. This charming little harbour is a favourite destination amongst the European jet-set community. This is the end of our hiking adventure in the land of the Cinque Terre. We return to Chamonix in the afternoon.
Up/Down : 280 m / Hiking Time : 3 H 00
