There are great differences between the Himalayas, the Rocky Mountains and the Alps. It is yet not easy to tell them apart, by just giving a quick glance at a picture of the ranges. Generally speaking, mountains have common features, such as rocky summits, trees growing on hillsides, snow remaining in shady couloirs … The Dolomites though show very specific aspects and are impossible to mistake for other massifs. Not only they were made from coral, but their history, flora and fauna make them really unique. Mountain lovers find the views offered by spectacular landscapes very striking.
Mountains of the Venetia region in Northern Italy have always inspired painters, writers and poets. For centuries the Dolomites peaks have attracted fearless climbers, keen hunters, mushroom pickers and of course hikers in search of intense moments in splendid nature. Follow us and discover the region of Cortina d’Ampezzo.
We carry all our belongings in our backpacks, and use local buses for transfers. Food and snack supplies are available from mountain villages and huts.
Day 1 : Arriving to Cortina d’Ampezzo (Pocol)
Group meeting late afternoon at Villa Argentina hotel, in the hamlet of Pocol, only 10 min away from Cortina, on the road heading to Col Falzarego.
Day 2 : Lake Misurina – Rifugio Lavaredo Elevation gain: 1 200m Elevation drop: 700m
Early transfer to Lake Misurina from where we start our 6-day hike ! First we hike across Ciampadelle valley, then start our way towards the famous Tre Cime di Lavaredo. These almost 10 000ft high peaks were the ideal playground for rock climbing forerunners back in the 1950ies. Even today, these vertical faces present the most incredible climbing challenges in Europe.
Day 3 : Le Tre Cime – Rifugio Vallandro Elevation gain: 750m Elevation drop: 1 050m
The morning sun is an invitation to head for our counter clockwise hiking loop around the Tre Cime. We may see climbers trying their hands on those gigantic faces. Then the trail traverses below Mount Paterno, across Val Rinbon and up to Vallandro hut. These remote alpine valleys have long adapted and developed their own language. In the region, local speak Ladin, a hybrid language that comes from German and Italian.
Day 4 : Croda Rossa - Refuge Fodara Elevation gain: 600m Elevation drop: 600m
Today’s hike takes us near and around the peaks of Croda Piccola and Grande. We follow a beautiful balcony trail and soon reach the alpine plateau and meadows, where edelweiss grows in the limestone chaotic ground. At Forcletta Sora Forno pass, we may encounter marmots and ibexes. Then we hike down to the Fodara mountain hut. The alpine plateau ends in a dwarf Mugo pine forest.
Day 5 : Refuge Fodara - Refuge Scotoni Elevation gain: 800m Elevation drop: 780m
At breakfast time, marmots are already playing outside, getting ready to pose for the tourists. Weather and terrain conditions permitting, we will hike a secret and seldom visited trail. After serious maintenance work, it opened again 3 years ago, meandering across the scree just below the huge faces of Gruppo delle Lavinares. Then our hike continues across the large alpine plateau leading the impressive Forcla Del Lago pass and the Scotoni hut.
Day 6 : Lagazuoi – Cinque Torri Elevation gain: 1 200m Elevation drop: 860m
First we hike up to Piccolo Lagazuoi, where some serious battles took place during WWI. During two years, the Italians fought against the Austro-Hungarian troops, building long underground walkways to hide and prepare their defence. We follow one of these tunnels to reach the base of the mountain, before heading towards Cinque Torri peaks.
Day 7 : Refuge Cinque Torri – Pocol Elevation gain: 200m Elevation drop: 800m
We hike back down and the trail leads us into a superb larch pine forest. Clearings along the way allow us to get amazing views of these white dolomitic faces and their many needles. We enjoy a picnic lunch near Pocol and transfer back to Chamonix in the afternoon.
The guide may have to adapt the route to weather conditions and/or to group physical and/or technical ability.
