30 years ago the French reinstated snowshoeing in the land of Reblochon cheese and bulb-shaped steeples. Indeed, the terrain offers an immense snowshoeing potential in the neighbouring ranges of Bornes and Aravis. Join us to discover the incredible alpine plateau des Glières, the beautiful mountain ridges above Annecy Lake, the Aravis alpine bowls leading to Pointe Percée, and many other favourite winter hiking destinations in the area.

Day 1 : LA MONTAGNE DES AUGES
Located just above the famous French resistance hide out Plateau des Glières, Montagne des Auges offers the perfect terrain to prepare our legs for the week’s hikes. Today’s snowshoe loop is absolutely amazing and offers many points of interest.

Day 2 : MONTAGNE DE SOUS-DINE
This area is known for being one of the largest reproduction areas for spruce grouse (petit Tétras) in Europe. In October and November, mountain goats (chamois) meet to reproduce… The tranquillity of the site is known to wildlife, and an exceptional place for curious hikers to visit in winter. In addition to the variety of snowshoeing options, it provides a superb look out point to admire the bordering Rochois region.

Day 3 : LE COL DES NANTETS
With its fresh-snow covered vegetation, Col des Nantets forms a doorway into another world. It allows hikers to transit from the north facing Montremont alpine valley to the sunny landscape that opens up towards Annecy Lake just below. To the North East, the Tournette Mountain (7 760ft) displays an amazingly contrasting view.

Day 4 : LE REFUGE DE GRAMUSSET
We are at the foot of Pointe Percée (9 800ft), the highest peak in the Aravis range. Todays 'beautiful snowshoe circuit resembles a guided visit of the Aravis alpine bowls. From the hamlet of Les Confins (4 720ft), we gradually gain altitude and leave the forest. Alpine valleys successively reveal themselves between the imposing peaks of the Aravis range.

Day 5 : LA MONTAGNE DE SULENS
Located above the traditional Manigod alpine valley, and at the southern tip of the Bornes range, this area offers a perfect view of Pointe des Aravis, and the nearby Mont Charvin (7 950ft) and the Tournette Mountain (7 640ft).

Guides and leaders may have to adapt program and hiking route to weather/ terrain conditions and according to group hiking skills.

Important : Estimated hiking time are based on a 825ft uphill, 1 650ft downhill progression per hour, covering an average distance of 2 miles. Average hiking times do not include lunch and view admiring breaks. Progression rythm for snowshoeing depends on snow quality, visibility and hikers' skills.

DIFFICULTY : This snowshoe hike is for active people with a good experience in multiday snowshoe-hikes. We hike light packed each day of this tour. We hike 6H00 per day, with a daily average vertical gain of 2000 to 2900ft. Snowshoeing on somewhat steep slopes that may require some technique.
ACCOMMODATION : 4 nights in a “Logis de France” labelled hotel, located in the centre of Thônes, (in double room).
GUIDING : Each mountain leader guides groups of 6 (min) to 8 people (max). The Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix's guiding policy is one of the most restrictive in the mountain guiding industry.
Important : no booking accepted in our scheduled groups for people under the age of 18.
MEETING PLACE : 8am at the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix (190, place de l'église, 74400 Chamonix). Or at 9am in Thônes.

INSURANCE : Our mountain leaders are self-employed professionals, and therefore covered under a liability insurance via the French Mountain Leaders Association (SNAM). As a tour operator, the Compagnie des Guides is also covered under a tour operator liability insurance contract (MMA IARD).
Repatriation and cancellation insurance are available from our office. Repatriation insurance is mandatory. We strongly recommend the purchase of cancellation insurance. Individual insurance cover for mountain activities is also recommended (ie. Carte Neige) as a complementary insurance.
TRAINING : Good physical condition will allow you to make the most of your holiday. A month before the hike at least, we suggest you walk upstairs, rather than use the elevator. During the weekends you can run, walk or ride your bike to train for the hike. Doing a medical check-up before signing for the trip is recommended. Your guide should be informed of any medical treatment.
