Verbier – Zermatt is an interesting alternative of the famous ski touring trip of the Haute Route “Chamonix-Zermatt”.
If you can’t be free during 6 days, this is the same route from Verbier to Zermatt. You cross over the Switzerland valley called “Valais”.
From Chamonix, we get to Le Chable by minibus (1h15), and arrive in the Swiss Wallis region, and the ski resort of Verbier. We ride the “Jumbo” tram (2 894 m) and soon put our skis on to climb La Chaux mountain pass (2 940 m). A second ascent takes us to Momin pass (3 003 m). We ski under the Rosablanche (3 336 m), which we can easily ski up and back down the same way. We ski to the nice Prafleuri hut (2662 m), where we can enjoy a warm shower, dinner and a recovering sleep.
Vertical gain: 700 m ± 2 310 ft / Vertical drop : 900 m ± 2970 m
Col de la Chaux
Early in the morning, we leave the hut and follow the “piste” to ski tour to Col de La Chaux (2940m/ 9700ft). After a short descent we quickly reach Col de Momin (3003m/ 9900ft). Then we ski tour along Rosablanche glacier (3277m/10800ft), before skiing down Prafleuri glacier to Col des Roux (2804m/9253ft). From the pass a gentle, traversing descent leads to the end of Lac des Dix and Pas du Chat (2372m/7827ft). Then we put our skins on our skis again and ski tour to Cabane des Dix. (2928m/9660ft).
Vertical gain: 850 m / 2 788ft – Vertical drop: 400 m / 1 312ft
Pas du Chat
The ascent of the Pigne d’Arolla (3 796 m) follows the glacier of Tsena Refien with the famous section of the Serpentine (conditions may require the use of crampons). One of the most beautiful viewpoints will amaze us at the top of the Pigne. It is an ocean of high summits and glaciers as far as the eye can see, the Alps at an arm’s reach. Our gorgeous day ends in a beautiful run to the Vignettes hut (3 160 m).
Vertical gain: 850m / 2 788ft – Vertical drop: 640m / 3 000ft
The Vignettes Hut
We skin up to the Evêque pass (3 392 m). Then, we enjoy the long run down the upper Arolla glacier. We take the direction to the Mont-Brulé mountain pass (3 213m). A little down and a long traverse to reach the Valpelline pass (3 557m). For the most brave skiers, it’s possible to reach the “tête de Valpelline” pass (3 799m).Today’s ski down is an exceptional run, surrounded by tormented and hanging glaciers. Show time! We ski right under the legendary North face of the Matterhorn. We meet the groomed runs at the Stafel ski area, and hope snow cover will allow us to ski down all the way to Zermatt (1 600 m).
Vertical gain: 900m / 2 952ft – Vertical drop: 2100m / 3 000ft
