During this unforgettable snowshoeing experience you will discover the authentic Vallorcine alpine valley and the magic of the Italian Val Ferret in the Aosta Valley!

Located just on the other side of Col des Montets road pass, Vallorcine is a peaceful village nestled at the entrance of the Bérard alpine bowl, in the Aiguilles Rouges mountain range. Often referred to as the “Bear Valley” (la Vallée des Ours), this area has remains authentically alpine, with Mont-Blanc in the nearby background.

Once on the other side and while admiring Mont-Blanc outstanding south face, we invite you to lunch and enjoy the typical locally cooked “polenta” or a delicious home-made “minestrone” at Auberge Lavachey in the Italian Val Ferret. A few hundred feet above us, we’ll find Bonatti hut and the Malatra alpine bowl, awaiting to welcome us in a magical hiker’s paradise.

We start our snowshoe trip with a tour into the Bérard alpine bowl, home of numerous great mountain animals such as chamois etc. Then we reach Tête des Combasses and the hamlet of Les Granges, before reaching Loriaz hut. The view from this authentic farm-looking hut is pure magic, making the place’s limited comfort seem so insignificant !
Up : 2 640 ft / Hiking Time : 5 to 6 H 00

As we hike up to reach higher round ridges above the hut, the view offers so much to please a hiker’s eye: a great panoramic view over the Swiss Wallis mountain ranges. Then we start our descent down the steep trail that leaks into the green spruce forest to the hamlet of Le Buet. Back at the eponymous hotel, we appreciate the tasty home-made cooking in a convivial atmosphere.
Up : 1 320 ft / Down : 3 630 ft / Hiking Time : 5 to 6 H 00

Val Ferret lays along the South face of the northeaster part of the Mont-Blanc range. We leave from Planpincieux and follow the Doire River until the hamlet of Lavachey. There we start our hike up to Bonatti, following a gradual trail up and into the larch pine forest. Built in 1998, this hut belongs to the semi-independent region of Aosta.  It provides hot showers, a spacious and comfortable atmosphere with walls finely decorated with pictures to illustrate Walter Bonatti’s adventurous life.
Up : 1 320 ft  /  Hiking Time : 4 to 5 H 00

Day 4 :
Malatra alpine bowl grants outdoor lovers with an amazing snowshoeing and hiking playground. The choice of routes above the hut is wide and it can easily be adapted to snow conditions and participants’ motivation.  The descent takes us back to the valley bottom, and along the other side of the river to Planpincieux. We return to Chamonix around 5:00pm.
Up : 660 ft  /  Down : 2 000 ft  /  Hiking Time : 5 to 6 H 00
