Situated on a mountain pass seperating Switzerland and Val d'Aosta in Italy, at 8 150ft, Hospice du Grand Saint Bernard has been managed by a group of religious men to provide shelter and hospitality to visitors for over 1000 years. In winter the pass can only be accessed on snowshoes or skis.
It is a legendary place for snowshoe adventures wandering on the Swiss or Italian side of the pass. Weather and snow conditions will define the selection of hikes among the many options offered.
Meet your group and your mountain leader, ready to start the hike, in Chamonix, or at the Martigny train station on day 1. From there, we transfer by minivan to the ski lift parking area in Bourg Saint Bernard, Switzerland.

Day 1 : BOURG SAINT BERNARD - HOSPICE GRAND ST BERNARD
We start in Bourg Saint Bernard (6 400 ft) and hike across “Combe des Morts” (bowl of the dead), named after the numerous travelers who perished here during winter stormy periods in the 18th and 19th century … We settle into the Hospice for the night.

Day 2 : FENÊTRE DE FERRET
We hike up towards the Ferret narrow Pass (8 850ft) bordering with Italy. A few feet higher, we reach a fantastic view point at 9 260ft, from where we can admire Grandes Jorasses and the Mont-Blanc range. We spend the night at the Hospice.

Day 3 : COL OUEST DE BARASSON
Today we hike to the Barasson Pass (8 640ft), also on the border between Italy and Switzerland. The Italian side of Mont-Blanc rewards us with a spectacular view. We hike back down to Bourg Saint Bernard through “Combe des Morts” again. Estimated time of arrival in Martigny train station (Switzerland) around 5pm.

Guides and leaders may have to adapt program and hiking route to weather/ terrain conditions and according to group hiking skills.

Important : Estimated hiking time are based on a 825ft uphill, 1 650ft downhill progression per hour, covering an average distance of 2 miles. Average hiking times do not include lunch and view admiring breaks. Progression rythm for snowshoeing depends on snow quality, visibility and hikers' skills.

- Repatriation insurance (mandatory). Cancellation insurance is highly recommended.
We provide optional insurance contracts for repatriation and trip cancellation (see booking form).
DIFFICULTY : For active, well-trained people with a hiking and/or snowshoeing experience. We carry our personal belongings in our backpack.
ACCOMMODATION : Hospice du Grand Saint Bernard, in double share room.
GUIDING : Each mountain guide leads group of 6 (min) to 8 people (max). The Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix's guiding policy is one of the most restrictive in the mountain guiding industry.
Important : no booking accepted in our scheduled groups for people under the age of 18.
MEETING PLACE : 9.30am at the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix (190, place de l'église, 74400 Chamonix).
Meeting can also be arranged at the Martigny train station, if specified in advance.
EQUIPMENT : See attached list.
INSURANCE : Our mountain leaders are self-employed professionals, and therefore covered under a liability insurance via the French Mountain Leaders Association (SNAM). As a tour operator, the Compagnie des Guides is also covered under a tour operator liability insurance contract (MMA IARD). Repatriation and cancellation insurance are available from our office. Repatriation insurance is mandatory. We strongly recommend the purchase of cancellation insurance. Individual insurance cover for mountain activities is also recommended (ie. Carte Neige) as a complementary insurance.
