The Matterhorn ( also known as Cervin) rises above the famous mountain resorts of Zermatt, Switzerland, and Cervinia, Italy.
The almost perfect pyramidal shape of this legendary peak is worldly known. As a result Its famous emblematic image has been used in business marketing ( ie. “Toblerone” chocolate, “Paramount Studios and Pictures”.
On the 14th of July, 1865, , English mountaineer Edward Whymper became again first summitter, climbing with two guides from Zermatt , a British named Charles Hudson and Chamonix guide, Michel Croz..
During the descent, a party member unfortunately fell and caused the death of Michel Croz and Charles Hudson.
Nowadays, one finds the ascent of the Hörnli Ridge made easier thanks to the presence of fixe dropes on the most technical sections. However, the effects of altitude and a big vertical gain ( from hut to summit : 1200 m ) require to be in excellent physical shape.
Day 1: Meet your mountain guide at Compagnie des Guides in Chamonix. Spend morning reviewing rope basics on a local climbing crag. Later in the afternoon, hike to hut and stay overnight.
Day 2: High alpine route to prepare and acclimatize. Ie. Dent du Géant normal Route. One client per guide. 2 people per guide
Day3: Preparation climb and acclimatization ( ie. North East ridge of the “M” ) 1 client per guide
Day 4: Drive to Zermatt – Climb to Hörnlihütte – stay at the hut. 1 client per guide.
Day 5: Climb up the Matterhorn- Back to Zermatt and later Chamonix. 1 client per guide
Climb presentation – Hörnli Ridge
Starting point: Zermatt- ride lifts up to Schwartzsee. From there hike for two hours to Hörnli Hütte.
Climb description: a long rocky ridge ( 1200 m vertical gain). Technical rock climbing sections with fixed ropes. Descent the same way. Good down climbing skills required.
Technical difficulty: A solid mountaineering experience and a strong physical shape are required for this climb. Need to master at least climbing grade 4+ It is also necessary to be well- acclimatized.
DATES : On Mondays, from mid July to end of August / early September.
