Grand Paradiso is an exceptional mountain range, and is the home of Italy’s first national park, created in 1922. In1850, the King of Sardinia had dedlared the area the “Royal Hunting Reserve”, giving birth to alpine wildlife protection in Europe. Originally covering an area of 2 100 hectares, it spreads over 72 000 hectares today. 6 mountain valleys lead to the typical villages of the “Val d’ Aosta”. A well established trail-network allows hikers to access wild mountain passes and summits.
This trip offers breathtaking views over pristine snowy peaks ; during the hike we will discover the beautiful open larch forest, alpine meadows and tundra, as well as turquoise mountain lakes. Welcome to mountain wildlife heaven, and its 6000 chamois, 4500 ibexes for the latest counting. The latter was long ago chosen as the Park’s emblem.
As a more traditional type of hike, this trip also requires a good hiking experience.
We carry all our belongings in our backpacks, and use local buses for transfers. We can prepare a bag on the side with extra change of clothes. It will be accessible on day 4. Food and snack supplies are available from mountain villages and huts.
Day 1 : CHAMONIX - REFUGE MARIO BEZZI
A minibus transfer of around 1 ½ hrs takes us to Valgrisenche and the hamlet of Usellières. A hike up to the Epée hut allows us afterwards to enjoy a panoramic traverse to the comfortable Mario Bezzi mountain hut.
Up : 800m / Down : 300m / Hiking Time : 6 H 00
Day 2 : REFUGE MARIO BEZZI - VAL DE RHÊMES
Our gaze takes in the Plattes des Chamoix, the Vaudet and the Gliairette glaciers as we make our way to the Bassac Déré mountain pass. This magnificent viewing point opens out onto not only Gran Paradiso, but also the Vanoise, Mont-Blanc and the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. A pleasant descent to Benevolo hut.
Up : 800m / Down : 800m / Hiking Time : 6 H 00
Day 3 : COL DE LA NIVOLETTA - SAVOIA HUT
We are at the doorstep of Gran Paradiso, and only a few steps away from col Nivoletta, the mountain pass and one of our objectives for today. As we enter the old glacier cirque, the fertile alpine lawn and its multiple bright-coloured flowers contrast with the dark slate scree of the steep hillsides. Glaciers are nearby and enlighten the panorama still. The hike over the pass is superb, offering more unforgettable mountain views to our eyes … At the end of the day, we hike down to the Savoia lakes and mountain hut.
Up : 900m / Down : 600m / Hiking Time : 6 H 00
Day 4 : LE TAOU BLANC (3438m)
Today’s highlight is the highest point of the trek. Taou Blanc is a beautiful peak and amazing belvedere from where one can face the 4000-meter peak of Gran Paradiso right in the heart of the whole range. From Col Leynir we hike towards Lac Noir (Black Lake) and the village of Pont in Valsavarenche.
Up : 1300m / Down : 1700m / Hiking Time : 8 H 00
Day 5 : EAUX ROUSSES - VITTORIO SELLA HUT
We leave Eaux Rousses early morning and commence a magnificent hike uphill to the Levionna plain, towards the Col Lauson, the highest non-glacial mountain pass in the park which is accessible to hikers. After a traverse on limestone and schist, a favourite place for mountain ibex, we quickly rejoin the grassy meadows which are home to marmots and chamois, and the Vittorio Sella mountain hut (not accessible by vehicles), where we will spend our last night.
Up : 1630m / Down : 710m / Hiking Time : 8 H 00
Day 6 : VAL DE COGNE
The cherry on the cake! A fantastic balcony trail will lead us to the bottom of the Herbetet natural circus near the east face of Gran Paradiso. The panorama here is grandiose with around ten glaciers descending from the summits of: Herbetet, Becca di Montandayne, Piccolo and Gran Paradiso, Testa di Valnontey, and Torre del Gran San Pietro, which dominates the Valnontey valley. We rejoin the village of Valnontey which marks the end of this superb trek. Transfer back to Chamonix.
Up : 100m / Down : 1000m / Hiking Time : 5 H 00
